RESOURCES FOR RUNAWAYS

If you or someone you know is considering running away or has already left home, it's important to know you're not alone. There are people and organizations ready to listen, help, and provide support. Below, we've compiled a list of resources and advice to ensure your safety and well-being.

BEFORE YOU RUN AWAY

Running away may seem like the only solution to your problems, but it’s important to carefully consider your options and the risks involved.

Here are steps to take before making such a decision:

TALK TO SOMEONE
YOU TRUST

Share your feelings with a trusted adult, teacher, counselor, or close friend. Sometimes, discussing your situation can help you find solutions or support you didn’t know was available.

CONTACT A
HELPLINE

Helplines provide confidential support from trained counselors who can help you explore your options:

OTHER OPTIONS

Consider alternatives like mediation services, foster care, or temporary housing programs that may address your situation without putting you at risk.

PLAN YOUR SAFETY

If you feel unsafe at home, look for safe spaces like a friend’s house, a community shelter, or a local organization that helps youth.

If You Have Already Run Away

STAY SAFE

Avoid staying in unsafe areas or with strangers who may try to exploit you. Seek out youth shelters or drop-in centers for runaways, which provide food, safety, and support.

CONTACT A HELPLINE OR SHELTER

Many organizations specialize in helping runaways:

StandUp for Kids: StandUpForKids.org – Offers programs and resources to homeless youth.

REACH OUT FOR MEDICAL HELP

RECONNECT WITH TRUSTED ADULTS

If possible, try to reconnect with family members, guardians, or trusted adults who can provide stability and assistance.

 SAFE SPACES AND SHELTERS

Covenant House

Youth
Homelessness Programs

Local Child
Welfare
Agencies

Contact your state’s Department of Social Services or Child Welfare for assistance.

Remember,

You don’t have to face this alone. There are people and organizations that want to help you find safety, support, and a better path forward. Running away may feel like the only answer, but reaching out for help can open doors to solutions you might not have considered.
